Harvest of the Month: Beef

Did You Know?
Beef is the top agricultural product exported from Kansas. In 2021, Kansas produced about 18% of the total U.S. beef supply. Kansas cattle are raised on grass, hay, and grains, with farmers ensuring their herds get all the nutrients they need to stay healthy. Besides meat, cattle provide byproducts used in everyday items like leather, tires, soap, and cosmetics.

Nutrition
Beef is an excellent source of protein, which helps build and repair muscles. It also contains essential vitamins and minerals that support overall health.

How Beef is Raised
Kansas cattle go through several stages as they grow:

  • Grazing: Cattle begin by eating grass in pastures and may also be fed grain, vitamins, and minerals.

  • Growing: When cattle reach 1,200–1,400 pounds at about 18–22 months old, they’re ready for the next step.

  • Processing: Cattle are sent to meat processing facilities inspected by state or federal agencies to ensure the meat is safe to eat.

Beef plays a big role in Kansas farming and provides high-quality protein for families across the country.
