STAGES AND PHASES TO EXPECT

Here are a few of the behaviors, attitudes and experiences that are common among high school students.

  • Students will develop even tighter connections with their peers, usually at a greater distance from their parents. This is one area of preparation for the independence of adulthood.

  • In general, high school girls’ social circles tend to be fluid and changing. High school boys’ social circles tend to be more static over time.

  • While friendships can dominate this developmental phase, teenagers are deeply influenced by family connection and interaction — whether they show it or not.

  • The independence of high school sometimes comes with the stress of academic expectations and realizing that college or career is approaching soon.

  • Disagreements with teachers or assigned class partners aren’t easy. This is an important chance to learn skills to get along with different personalities.

LEARNING AT HOME

Families at this stage can make a big difference by allowing teenagers to find their way through the ups and downs. Casual questions about what they did to navigate a difficult time can help them learn and reflect on valuable problem-solving skills for life.

  • At times teenagers can seem always on the go — and distracted at home. Even a brief, casual interaction can help create healthy connection.

  • High school can be stressful (parenting, too!). Don’t forget to look for opportunities to relax and laugh together, such as joining your teenager on the sofa for a favorite game or show.

  • Many high schoolers learn valuable skills at school, such as cooking, auto repair, woodworking, video production and healthcare expertise. These can be enjoyable things to share and use at home.

LEARNING AT SCHOOL

We love working with high schoolers, supporting them as they prepare for a bright future.

  • We invest in positive relationships between teachers, staff and students to make school a safe and caring place for all students.

  • Students are learning to manage their classwork and other commitments, taking charge of getting help when they need it. This includes skills for stress management, organization and perseverance.

  • Our staff works hard to make sure there are courses and activities to nurture students’ interests and skills. This allows students to explore more deeply their strengths and talents and think about life after high school.

  • Students gain a deeper understanding of how their mind and body work, including mental wellbeing and signs of healthy / unhealthy relationships.
