Last week, the Larned High School construction class took to the site of the future community garden garage, measuring elevations under the guidance of Alan Taylor, the City of Larned Street Department Superintendent. As part of the project, the City of Larned will pour the concrete pad, while Taylor demonstrated the process of laying out elevations and explained key considerations for concrete layout and design to the students.
This garage project, a collaboration between the City of Larned, Larned Pride, and the Larned High School construction class, will be built by the students throughout the year. “We’re thrilled to be part of this initiative,” said Mr. Hewson, Larned High School’s shop teacher. “Thanks to generous grants like the Build the Trades Dewalt Grant, we now have the tools to take on larger-scale projects like this one. While building dog houses and chicken coops in the shop is great for learning, projects like the garage provide students with invaluable, hands-on experience in real-world construction.”
The project also plays a key role in advancing students toward their NCCER construction certification, a nationally recognized credential in the construction industry.
