January is School Board Recognition Month, and USD 495 would like to express gratitude to each of our Board of Education members for their incredible service to our community and public schools. Our school board includes Brent Hemken, Tyson Atteberry, Tyson Steffen, Michelle Koch, Jessie Pleasant, Buddy Tabler, and Mike Myrick.
These seven community leaders develop policies and make important decisions that help shape the future of our education system. Entrusted by the Larned community, they oversee our annual budget, three student attendance centers, and most importantly, 860+ students and 200+ employees.
Continuing on our journey to spotlight our members, today we're featuring our Board President, Brent Hemken!
Why did you decide to serve on our school board?
"I chose to serve on the board to provide a relevant, effective educational experience that equips all our students with the ability to pursue their interests and develop skills relevant to their future. To prepare our youth for the future, we must offer a balanced approach to K-12 education that addresses the diverse paths they may take, whether in the workforce, higher education, or community and business leadership."
What’s something about our schools that makes you really proud?
"I am most proud of our innovative and caring staff. Every day, our staff works across the district to solve problems and reach students in new and unique ways. Their creative and individualized approach to education is both amazing and beneficial for our students."
What’s one challenge you’d like the board to tackle in 2024?
"In 2024, I want to see USD 495 continue to develop our curriculum and explore ways to meet state standards while providing relevant educational experiences for our youth."
