January is School Board Recognition Month, a great opportunity to say thank you to the USD 495 Board of Education who are committed to the success of every student in our community.
USD 495's school board includes Brent Hemken, Tyson Atteberry, Tyson Steffen, Michelle Koch, Jessie Pleasant, Buddy Tabler, and Mike Myrick. These seven community leaders volunteer hundreds of hours attending meetings, reading reports and discussing plans and programs to support educational achievement. Join us in thanking them, not only this month but throughout the entire year. We will continue to put our members in the spotlight in the upcoming weeks. Today, let's hear from and recognize board member, Jessie Pleasant!
Why did you decide to serve on our school board?
"I decided to serve on the board because I grew up here and love my hometown. I wanted to be involved in my kids’ education and give back to my community."
What’s something about our schools that makes you really proud?
"I am very proud of our facilities. We are constantly trying to improve our schools and update our programs. I walked the halls of the high school in the nineties. Since that time, we have constructed a new middle school and elementary school as well as provided updates to the high school and football field."
What’s one challenge you’d like the board to tackle in 2024?
"I would like our next big investment to be in our curriculum. That could take form in a variety of ways but I hope that we can work together to offer programs that are unique to our area, relevant in our community, and could draw students from surrounding towns."
