It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It is a drone? One of the electives that we offer at Larned Middle School involves learning about how to fly drones. Gabriel Upson teaches a class for a semester in which students learn about air currents, lift, and other principles of flying. They construct basic paper airplanes and other simple flying devices to test the scientific principles of flight. As they progress past basics, they move into flying small drones through obstacles. Mr. Upson has circle rings, landing areas, and more than the students maneuver the aircraft through. The final phase involves students flying through simulations on the computer before graduating to the larger drones and flying outside. As the world evolves, more and more drones are used for different industries from cameras for sporting events to mapping out hard to reach locations. We hope that introducing interested students to these devices at LMS spurs them toward future careers in the field. So when you come by LMS this spring and see an object flying through the air, it could very well be one of our drones.
