What Are State Assessments?
Each spring, students across Kansas—including those in USD 495—take part in the Kansas Assessment Program. These are short sets of online tests given during the school day that measure how well students are learning grade-level skills in reading, math, and science.
These assessments are designed by the state of Kansas to help schools understand how students are doing and where extra support or challenge might be needed. They also help us see how our schools and district are doing as a whole.
Why Do They Matter?
Think of these tests as a check-in. They help teachers, principals, and district leaders:
See how well students are learning important concepts
Adjust lessons and supports to meet students where they are
Identify areas where schools may need more resources or focus
Ensure we’re preparing students for future success
But most importantly: They help us help your child.
We don’t want students to stress about these tests—but we do want them to try their best. It gives us a clearer picture of their growth and how we can support them moving forward.
How Can Families Help?
Your encouragement and support make a big difference! Here are three simple ways to help your child feel ready:
Stay positive. Remind your child that effort is what matters. These tests are just one way to show what they’ve learned.
Stick to routines. A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast go a long way on test days.
Be mindful of scheduling. Avoid planning appointments or time off during testing windows when possible.
If you have questions about your child’s participation, reach out to their teacher or building principal.

A Few Final Notes:
Each test is broken into sections and is designed to be completed in manageable parts to help students from feeling overwhelmed.
Results from these tests are just one part of the bigger picture. We also look at classroom work, progress monitoring, and teacher input to support every student.
We’ll share test results with families as soon as they’re available, which we expect to be in Fall 2025.
We’re proud of our students—and thankful for your support in helping them feel calm, confident, and ready to do their best!
