WHO ARE SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKERS?

School Social Workers are trained professionals with a Master's degree in social work who provide services related to students’ social and emotional needs; understanding that those needs directly influence children’s ability to grow and thrive throughout their educational journey. School Social Workers are the link between home, school and community; providing direct as well as indirect services to students, families and school personnel to promote and support students' academic and social success.

SPECIFIC SERVICES A SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER CAN PROVIDE INCLUDE:

  • Working with families to remove barriers preventing regular attendance

  • Providing individual or group counseling

  • Assisting parents in accessing school and community resources

  • Providing crisis intervention

  • Assisting in developing behavioral intervention strategies

  • Developing intervention strategies to increase academic success

  • Helping children to develop appropriate social skills and coping skills

  • Working with parents to facilitate their support in their child's school adjustment

  • Direct support to school staff

REFERRALS TO THE SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER

Students may receive school social work services through a request or referral from a member of the LES staff or a parent/guardian. Caregivers, if your family is experiencing a transition such as moving, changing schools, a family addition, divorce or a death in the family, you may see some changes in the behavior of your child at home and at school. This is totally normal and each child will adjust to transitions differently. If you would like to consult with the school social worker about your child’s adjustment or other behavioral concerns affecting their social and  school success, please don’t hesitate to contact Tina Gladow, LMSW at LES by calling the office at 620-285-2141, emailing tina.gladow@usd495.com or communicating with Mrs. Gladow through Rooms.
